The best first photo for your dating profile
The best first dating photo is a recent, sharp photo of you alone, framed from the chest up, in soft natural light, with your face and eyes clearly visible and a relaxed, genuine expression. Its only job is to show clearly what you look like.

The checklist
- Solo. Nobody else in frame, not even partly.
- Recent. It should look like you today: same hair, similar build.
- Eyes visible. No sunglasses, no deep hat shadow.
- Chest-up framing. Your face should be easy to read on a small screen. Leave a little space above your head.
- Soft light on your face. Open shade outdoors, or facing a window indoors. Avoid harsh midday sun and overhead bulbs.
- Simple background. A wall, greenery, a street, slightly out of focus. Nothing that competes with your face.
- Sharp. In focus on your eyes, no motion blur, no heavy compression from screenshots.
- Unfiltered. Light edits are fine; beauty filters aren't.
How to take it
- Ask a friend to shoot it, or prop your phone at eye level and use the timer. Arm's-length selfies distort features.
- Use the phone's 2× lens if it has one, standing a few steps back. It's more flattering than the wide lens up close.
- Stand facing the light, turn your body slightly, face toward the camera.
- Take a lot of frames and talk or laugh between them. The best expression is usually the one right after a real laugh.
Lighting makes or breaks this photo; see our lighting guide and our notes on smiling.
Mistakes that sink a first photo
Works
- Clear solo shot
- Natural smile or warm look
- Soft daylight
Doesn't
- Group photo first
- Sunglasses or a hat hiding your eyes
- Bathroom-mirror or car selfie
- A tiny figure in a big landscape
Big landscapes and group shots can be great photos. They just belong further down your profile.

Frequently asked questions
Should I smile in my first dating photo?
A genuine smile is a safe choice for a lead photo because it reads as warm and approachable. A relaxed, confident look also works. What matters most is that it looks natural.
Can my first dating photo be a selfie?
Yes, if it is well lit, sharp and not taken too close. A photo taken by someone else, or on a timer from a few steps away, usually looks better.
