Group photos on dating apps: how many, and where

Last updated · By the Matchframe team at Tall Poppy Studio

Use one group photo on a dating profile, placed after your solo photos, in which you are easy to identify and clearly part of the moment. Hinge advises against more than one, and Bumble suggests one or two photos with other people, placed lower on your profile.

Why use one at all

A good group photo shows that people enjoy your company, and it's a natural way to include a moment that's hard to capture alone. The risk is confusion: if someone has to work out which person you are, they often won't bother.

Rules that keep it working

  1. Never first. Your solo photos should already have taught people what you look like.
  2. Only one (two at most). Hinge's 2025 guidance says to pass on more than one; Bumble says one or two photos with others.
  3. You're easy to spot: centre of the frame, in focus, facing the camera.
  4. Small groups of two to four read better than crowds.
  5. Get consent from the friends in it. Bumble asks for this too.
  6. No exes, cropped or covered with an emoji. Use a solo shot instead.

Good group-photo moments

  • A dinner table or celebration where everyone's laughing
  • A team photo from a sport you play
  • A wedding where you're dressed up (this can double as your dressed-up photo)
  • A trip with friends, shot close enough to see faces

Things that backfire

  • Being the least visible person in the photo
  • A friend who might be read as your partner, with no context
  • Group shots where everyone's holding drinks, as your only social photo

Frequently asked questions

Should I put a group photo first on Tinder, Hinge or Bumble?

No. Lead with a clear solo photo so people know who you are, then add one group photo later in your lineup.

How many group photos should be on a dating profile?

One, or two at most. Both Hinge and Bumble advise keeping photos with other people to a minimum.
