Lighting for dating photos, with just a phone

Last updated · By the Matchframe team at Tall Poppy Studio

The best light for dating photos is soft and in front of you: a large window to your side or front indoors, open shade outdoors, or the low sun of the hour after sunrise or before sunset. Avoid overhead lights, harsh midday sun and strong light from behind you.

Four setups that cost nothing

1. Window light (indoors)

Stand or sit facing a large window, or at a slight angle to it, with the photographer between you and the window. Turn off overhead lights so colours don't mix. Overcast days give the softest light.

2. Open shade (outdoors, any time)

Stand just inside the shade of a building or tree, facing the bright open area. You get even light on your face without squinting or hard shadows.

3. Golden hour

In the hour after sunrise and before sunset the sun is low and warm. Face it at an angle for a warm glow, or put it behind you and expose for your face for a soft rim of light.

4. Evening and indoor venues

For a night-out or dressed-up photo, find the brightest light source (a lamp, a lit shop window, a bar's back light) and face it. Use the phone's night mode and hold still.

Light to avoid

  • Overhead lights: they cast shadows under your eyes and nose.
  • Midday sun: squinting and hard shadows. Move into open shade.
  • Strong backlight with no light on your face: you become a silhouette.
  • Flash in the dark: flat, shiny, and every flaw in the background lights up.

Phone tips

  • Tap your face to set focus and exposure; drag the brightness slider down slightly if highlights blow out.
  • Clean the lens. A smudge looks like haze.
  • Use the 2× lens from a few steps away for portraits. See the first-photo guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time of day for dating photos?

The hour after sunrise or before sunset (golden hour) gives warm, soft light. Any time of day works in open shade.

How do I take good dating photos indoors?

Face a large window with overhead lights off. The window should be in front of you or slightly to the side, never behind you.
